Over the years; I moved out of home and she acquired a boyfriend that can cook a mean feed. A lot of their meals revolve around pasta these days. As most people do, her exercise habits reduced and she put on a little bit of weight. But she has lost a lot of weight recently and when I asked how have you been losing weight?, she said "I have stopped buying cheap pasta and I buy the more expensive pasta now". Noooooo.
There were a few more changes, but all I heard was 'we need to talk.'
Nutrition is not taught at school, cooking is, but then how do you know whether what you are eating/cooking is good or bad for you?
So, lesson one: pasta is carbohydrates, carbs are awesome for energy but generally speaking, you don't need to consume it. Your brain needs carbohydrates to function but your body creates enough of this carbohydrate that you don't need to consume it via food. Now this is completely different if you are an athlete. Athletes need fuel (carbohydrates) to exercise and this should be from carbs and fat.
Veggies and fruit: the government have now put this on top of the food pyramid. You need this stuff and lots of it. These are the foods that give you your vitamins and minerals that help your body function. They help your eyesight, keep you from getting cold sores, they stop you from getting sick. O, and they have less energy then protein, carbs and alcohol so you can eat more of them to get the same amount of energy.
Protein: is found in your hair, skin, nails and more.
Protein = muscles. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn doing nothing. Who wants to burn calories doing nothing? I know I do.
If you eat too many calories in protein, you body needs to store these excessive calories. But in order to do this your body burns more calories than if you over eat in carbs. Think of it like this: I eat 1000 calories in carbs, my body needs only 500 calories, bam, 200 calories goes to my bottom, the rest is used for to get it there. But if I eat 1000 calories in protein and my body only needs 500 calories, bam 50 calories get stored on my bottom, because the rest are used to store it.
It's 1130pm and there is a specific formula but that is not it. I will edit this post at a later date to have the specific information on how many calories get stored when you overeat carbs vs protein.
At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is alcohol and carbs should be reduced, protein is needed for everything in your body and you should get most of your vitamins and minerals from food. There is so much more to discuss, for example not all calories are the same and some fats are good for you and some carbs are better than others but either you can wait for me to post about it, or book an appointment and come and see me.
Ps. Drink water, limit soft drink.
